Terrible things happen all the time. Sometimes they are more terrible than others. 2016 is just another year. Time keeps ticking by. As a reminder that life goes on, things get better, and everything changes, here’s a list of all the terrible things that have happened in years ending with 6 (just in case you didn’t feel shitty already.)

1906: The HMS Dreadnought was completed. The ship beckoned in a new era of naval warfare, and began the arms race between Germany and Britain.
1906: An earthquake strikes San Francisco. 80% of the city is destroyed. 3,000 people die. It is still known as one of the worst natural disasters America has ever faced.

1916: The Battle of the Somme. More than a million soldiers are killed. The result of the battle is inconclusive.

1926: United Kingdom General Strike takes place. Strikers demands are ignored. Miners continue to strike.
1926: The NSDAP (The Nazi Party) is formed in Weimar.
1926: Flooding strikes Cologne. 50,000 must leave their homes.

1936: Nazi Germany reoccupies the Rhineland in defiance of the Treaty of Versailles.
1936: Koki Horita, a radical militarist, becomes Prime Minister of Japan.
1936: The Arab revolt begins.
1936: Rome and Berlin, Italy and Germany, form the Axis.

1946: Ho Chi Minh signs an accord with France that deems Vietnam an autonomous state, a precursor to the Vietnam War. Later in the year, Vietnam declares war on France.
1946: A bomb outside the King David Hotel (British Civil Administration building) in Jerusalem kills 90.

1946: The last lynch mob in America. Two African American couples are killed.
1946: Harold Shipman and Peter Sutcliffe are born. The year of the serial killers.
1956: Riots in Polish Poznan are crushed. The Soviets fire into crowds, killing 53.
1956: The Suez Crisis. Israel invades Egypt. France and Britain bomb Egypt to allow the Israelis to re-open the Suez canal.
1956: Khan Yunis massacre. Israeli forces shoot dead hundreds of Palestinian refugees.

1966: The Palomares disaster. The U.S air-force accidentally drops three nuclear bombs on Southern Spain after a refuelling plane and a bomber collide in the air. The bombs do not explode, but large amounts of radiation is dispersed across the Southern coast. The incident is largely covered up by the U.S government.
1966: The Beaumont children disappear in Australia. They are never seen again. It remains one of Australia’s most infamous criminal investigations.
1966: The U.S announces it will significantly increase the amount of soldiers stationed in Vietnam.
1976: Apple is formed by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs.

1976: Yuba city bus disaster, 28 students are killed. Worst bus crash in U.S history.
1976: First outbreak of Legionnaires disease in Philadelphia. Followed later in the year by the first outbreak of Ebola in Zaire.
1986: The first computer virus, BRAIN, starts to spread.
1986: The Challenger disaster. All 7 astronauts on-board are killed.
1986: Berlin discotheque bombing, 230 are killed. The bomb was placed in a bar well known to be a hangout for U.S soldiers. Libya is to be blamed.
1986: Chernobyl disaster. The nuclear reactor goes into meltdown and explodes. At least 4,000 people are killed in the initial blast. Many thousands, potentially hundreds of thousands, are affected by nuclear fallout.
1996: North Cape Oil spill. 820,000 gallons of home heating oil are leaked.
1996: IRA Docklands bombing: 2 killed. IRA briefcase bomb: injures 9 in West London.
1996: The Dunblane Massacre: Former shopkeeper Thomas Hamilton kills 16 infant school pupils at school in Scotland.
1996: Israelis “Operation Grapes of Wrath” begins, massive attacks on Lebanon. Over 100 Lebanese civilians are killed during the Qana Massacre.
2006: Tony Blair is Prime Minister.
2006: First case of the Avian flu in the UK (Scotland)
2006: Tsunami hits Java. 668 people are killed.
2006: North Korea completes its first nuclear test.
